“HOW DOGS COMMUNICATE”

by Winkie Spiers

A one-day seminar for breeders, dog owners, trainers, behaviourists,

veterinary and dog rescue centre staff!

Discover how to recognise and interpret what our dogs are feeling and thinking and how we can encourage them to enjoy good social interactions. Good communication and social skills are hugely important to us and our dogs and this Seminar will enable you to gain a far greater understanding!

Not to be understood is extremely frustrating and lack of communication in any relationship leads to misunderstanding, confusion and even behaviour problems. Dogs communicate in many ways but primarily using body language. We will look at how to recognise their signals, how to understand our dogs better and how to encourage them to have good social interactions with other dogs, other species and with ourselves so that we can make life easier and more enjoyable for us both. Photos and video will be used to demonstrate points and time will be available for your questions.

A great opportunity to enjoy an entertaining and interesting talk and learn even more about canine communication!

Winkie Spiers is a member Association of Pet Dog Trainers (00804), Chairwoman & member Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (F036), human & canine Bowen Therapist has studied dog behaviour, training, communication, care and health quite extensively. She has been on many dog related courses, completed a 2 year OCN course (International Dog Behaviour & Training School) and continues to learn and expand her skills. She speaks abroad and in the UK on a wide range of dog related subjects and her first book How to Handle Living With Your Dog has recently been published.  Visit Winkie’s website at www.winkiespiers.com

How to control predatory chasing in dogs with David Ryan

Dogs r Dogs are proud to host a workshop.

Venue: Willand Village Hall, Devon, EX15 2PL

Date: 7 May 2010

Throwing a ball for their dog to chase is an enjoyable experience for many owners. For other owners canine chase behaviour turns into a nightmare when their dog chases cyclists, cars, sheep or other dogs. When their dogs choose what to chase it can compromise owners financially, cause the target severe injury or even death, and threaten the life of the dog.

This workshop looks at the reasons for uncontrollable chase behaviour, the more effective solutions and how to control the behaviour.

David Ryan was a police dog handler and Home Office accredited training instructor for 26 years.  He is an accredited Clinical Animal Behaviourist and the current chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.  He provides companion animal behaviour counselling services on veterinary referral and an expert witness consultancy concerning both civil and criminal litigation involving dogs.

David has appeared in the television series ‘Crimefighters’ focusing on his work with police dogs, and more recently as a guest on the BBC 4 programme “It’s only a theory”. His articles have appeared in publications as diverse as the Daily Telegraph, Woman’s Own and Veterinary Times.

In addition to spectator places, a limited number of working places are available:

Spectators £25, Handlers £50

 “THE SPIRITUAL DOG TRAINER”

with Sally Askew

Examining different ideas for living in harmony with our dogs

Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th June 2010
@ Clopton Village Hall, Suffolk

We are living in a time of change in all areas of life.  Change is coming in the dog world –  slowly at first, but people are becoming increasingly more ready to examine all the ideas and strategies that lie at the heart of living with dogs.  They are ready to develop a more spiritual, mutually respectful way of living with dogs.  This weekend is aimed at those who wish to:-

  • Explore and further develop their relationship with their dog with the aim of living in harmony, mutual respect and understanding.
  • Work professionally with people & dogs together, helping the people to be considerate of both social groups.
  • Gain clarity of mind and insight.
  • Explore and understand the energy and wonder of the natural human connection with dogs, and to understand its meaning.

Good relationships are based on respect, good communication and presence.  This seminar will highlight some practical concepts and strategies that can be developed and used to explore and clarify ideas at the heart of the Spiritual Dog Trainer’s practice including:

  • Connecting fully with the energy and wonder of all life, especially dogs.
  • Reflection and self-management that give one consistent personal development.
  • Values, inspiration and integrity that serve one's fellow beings.

This course will provide an initial exploration of these concepts and how they can be developed in a practical way.  The weekend will involve presentations, discussions and guided meditations as well as some Taoist Chi Kung exercises.

Dogs today have a role to play in their lives with humans that is only just becoming fully acknowledged. This course aims to help to bridge the gap between the two species, so that both species can be rewarded with a fulfilling inter-species relationship.

Sally Askew maintains a busy private canine practice offering a truly holistic way of living with dogs and has been using complementary therapies in her training and behavioural work with dogs for several years. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT No 0398) and GEOTA (Guild of Essential Oil Therapist for Animals) as well as being an Honorary Member of Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE). She is a human Nutritionist and one of only a few non-veterinarians to hold the C&G Certificate in Small Animal Nutrition. As well as being a qualified teacher of people, Sally is trained in Energy work and is accredited to teach Chi Kung to an Advanced Level.
