Jean Dodds
Thyroid Problems in Dogs
& A New Vaccine Protocol
UNDERACTIVE THYROID PROBLEMS
WHAT VACCINE DOES MY DOG NEED AND HOW OFTEN

http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/DODDS-RESUME.HTM
The venue for the 2012 APDT Lecture Series is the Hilton Manchester Airport Hotel which has excellent conference facilities and is located near Manchester Airport.
This year we are very fortunate to have Dr. Jean Dodds present a day on Hypothyroidism and Vaccine Issues. This will be a day not to be missed for anyone working with dogs in training, behaviour and veterinary practice.
Those of us who have been affected by Hypothyroidism in our dogs know it is very difficult to find a UK vet who is attuned to this all to common problem, and even more difficult to get blood work done to the detail that is needed to make a proper diagnosis.
Dr. Dodds is a leading expert in the testing and diagnosis of thyroid problems. She has also been a strong campaigner to change the vaccination protocol in the US and had been instrumental in achieving changes in revaccination schedules.
Come join us for an interesting and informative day which will give you much to think about and new ideas with which to go forward into the dog training world.
We urge to you make sure your local veterinary practice knows about this presentation and hope to reach as many vets and vet nurses as possible.

Holistic vet Nick Thompson BSc (Hons) Path Sci., BVM&S, VetMFHom, MRCVS
Nick will be discussing new research that he feels contradicts the prevailing view of gonadectomy being a relatively benign procedure. Nick will be sharing studies which he feels demonstrated the behavioural impact of neutering dogs where they were found to be more aggressive, fearful, excitable, noise phobic and less trainable than intact dogs. He will also be looking at the physical effects such as significant differences in bone growth predisposing neutered dogs to increased incidences of cruciate rupture and early onset osteoarthritis, and the increased risk of certain fatal cancers in neutered dogs such as the 5 x greater chance of a neutered bitch getting haemangiosarcoma (fatal cancer of the spleen) and prostate cancer which was shown to be 4 x more common in neutered dogs than in entire males. A complicated picture!

SCENT TRAINING FOR DOGS SEMINAR WITH DAVID RYAN

Saturday 25 February 10am – 4pm
Fraser Hall, Cowan Bridge, near Kirkby Lonsdale, LA6 2HX
£35 – bring your own lunch – tea / coffee provided
This full day seminar explores the theory and practice of training for scent with dogs. The seminar will be classroom based with PowerPoint and videos to illustrate the presentation. Included is advice on how to put into practice for fun with pet dogs.
We all know that dogs’ noses are so much better than ours, but a greater understanding helps us relate to our dogs in greater depth.
Whether you train for work, competition, or simply for the huge fun that you and your dog can have together, understanding how our dogs observe the world through their noses helps us to get the best out of their remarkable abilities.
David has twenty-six years experience of working with police dogs and training handlers in tracking and searching for people, property, explosives, narcotics, cash and firearms, together with post graduate study. He is ideally placed to translate theory into best practice.
Ever wondered what ‘scent’ actually is? Why some dogs are better at searching than others? What the ideal scenting conditions are? How to train your dog to find lost money? Other questions and discussion are welcome

TELLINGTON TOUCH TRAINING
Saturday 24 March 2012
A hands-on” basic introduction Workshop
This Workshop is suitable for Handlers Dogs who will be happy to spend time working in a hall environment and are also happy to spend time in the car or an indoor kennel to rest, without becoming unduly stressed, reactive or proactively aggressive towards other dogs or people. You do not have to bring a dog to this workshop to participate fully as both Handler and Spectator places are available.
The aim is to give the opportunity to practice with each other and with participating dogs so that everybody takes some practical skills away from the course.
Toni studied under Linda Tellington - Jones and other top Tellington TTouch Instructors to become a registered Level 1 Tellington TTouch Companion Animal Practitioner. She was one of the first to qualify in the UK and has really seen TTouch grow over the years in this country.
Toni has appeared alongside Sarah Fisher in the hit TV series ‘Talking to Animals’ and has also been featured in articles for ‘Dogs Today’ and ‘Your Dog’ magazine.
Toni works with all animals including dogs, cats, small animals, birds, horses, reptiles, wild life and non-domesticated animals. For ten years she worked with socialised wolves at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust as a senior handler and education officer although left in 2011 to concentrate on her TTouch work and writing. Toni now writes for national dog magazines and has just completed her first book, ‘The Truth about Wolves and Dogs, (Dispelling the Myths of Dog Training)’, which will be available in 2012.
The aim is to give the opportunity to practice with each other and with participating dogs so that everybody takes some practical skills away from the course.
The Workshop will therefore only be suitable for 'teacher dogs', who will be happy to spend time in the hall working with people and time in the car or an indoor kennel to rest, without becoming unduly stressed, reactive or proactively aggressive towards other dogs or people. UNDOING HANDLER AND RESTRAINT DAMAGE
Avoiding physical problems during training, showing, working, kennelling
By

Tony Nevin, BSc (Hons) Ost., D.O.
Osteopath
Being aware that we can become so focussed on what we’re doing that we lose touch with how we do it, Tony is going to help as avoid the various pitfalls associated with handling dogs that can end up compromising their postures and ability to move freely. Addressing matters such as the altered pattern of muscle tension in the neck and lumbar spine resulting from lead walking; the affect on body framework of positioning in obedience training and from restraint methods; the impact on agility dogs of jumping, weaving and tight turns; shorts bursts of activity from a cold start required by working gundogs; scaling of 6’ vertical fences from working trials dogs; rhabdomylelosis, a form of severe cramp in the hamstrings of racing greyhounds; the behavioural and subsequent bio mechanical impact of limited kennel space right through to show dogs, who Tony suggests, generally speaking maintain good posture but where over-control can lead to uneven wear and tear – head up, straight limb flight action, and unmoving tail held taught.
Cost £49.00 per delegate
Teas, coffees, biscuits etc will be provided
