   TEACHING DOGS TO IGNORE LIVESTOCK

A UNIQUE INTERACTIVE HANDS- ON WORKSHOP

Following  dates,  July 27th28th. August 3rd and 4th and August 10thand 11th

The venue is a training farm situated between Hereford and Abergavenny

I work on The Malvern Hills in Worcestershire and the training farm above and I have specialised in the affects of companion dogs on amenity land in urban areas for over fifteen years. I work with several public bodies with the aim of reducing incidents of livestock worrying, including the graziers association.

The Malvern Hills Conservators in conjunction with the graziers association have asked me to work with and form associations with other trainers dealing in any way with livestock worrying by dogs. The courses I run offer opportunities and training in order for me to provide a list of proficient trainers throughout the country, to whom graziers can refer.

My courses are practical, interactive, hands on and co-operative.

Although I deal with all levels of chase behaviour I have found during my time in this specialised area that very few dogs are predatory chasers, the vast majority of dogs can be stopped from chasing permanently by positively and systematically overlaying alternative, acceptable, rewardable behaviour. My training emphasis is on impulse control, off lead and distance control, and setting up real life challenging situations working with trained  and untrained sheep and fast moving livestock targets.

There is a large flat outdoor training area, an indoor training area and very comfortable relaxation areas.

My background is practical, from working with sheep and sheep dogs, followed by courses with Ian Dunbar, Sarah Whitehead , Kay Lawrence, and others and  I am assembling evidence for KCAI accreditation

It is sometimes possible to attend for a one day workhsop only, by arrangement.

Cost £120 two day workshop, on farm accommodation sometimes available

    HEAVEN SCENT

                            ONE DAY SCENTING WORKSHOP

Monday 2nd August 2010, 10-4pm

Turn your dog’s favourite pastime into your favourite hobby. Dogs love to sniff and smell their way through the day. Why not harness this skill? When I worked as a Customs drug detector dog handler I adored the teamwork, the joy of working together with my dog for a common purpose. I have been teaching varies types of searches in my classes for the last 18 months and have been delighted with the enthusiasm of both dogs and owners to learn scentwork skills. Come and learn about free and directed searches, scent pictures and handling techniques. This workshop will allow handlers to work their dogs in building and vehicle searches once you’ve learned the basics of how to build trust and teamwork. A day packed full of advice on how to use scentwork to aid concentration, enhance training and improve behaviour. Tiring, satisfying and addictive!

We have limited places for dogs that are friendly and sociable with both people and other dogs.

Spectator places are also available – lots to learn from watching others learning scentwork.

     SAFE & DEFENSIVE HANDLING

                                    ONE DAY WORKSHOP

Monday 27th September 2010

The essence of defensive handling is not getting bitten! But how do you actually do that? Instead of hoping that your natural survival instinct will kick in, this workshop is designed to give you the tools to identify when, how and why you might be bitten; understand and practise effective, tried and tested techniques; and learn which piece of equipment can help you best in those tricky situations. This is a must for everyone who works or volunteers with dogs in any capacity – including nursing, kennels, fostering and training.

Abbots Ripton Village Hall, Huntingdon, Cambs

Monday 27th September 2010, 10am - 4pm

Tickets are £50 and include all day refreshments.

  STRESS IS NO JOKE

Presented by Winkie Spiers AN INTERESTING & INFORMATIVE TALK ON STRESS  How It Impacts On Us and Our Dogs In Daily Life And What We Can Do About It? Seminar for dog owners, trainers, behaviourists, breeders, veterinary & rescue staff

Date: Saturday 16 October 2010

Venue:  Sway Village Hall, Middle Road, Sway, Lymington Hampshire, SO41 6BB

Registration: From 9.15am – Start 10.00am  –  Close Approx 4.30pm

Cost: Only £35.00 per head to include Coffee on arrival; Mid-Morning Tea/Coffee Ploughman’s  Lunch & Afternoon Tea/Coffee with special CDT Cake.

Stress may contribute to many behavioural problems e.g. pulling on lead, destructive tendencies,

over-excitement, aggression, barking and many more unwanted symptoms.

Stress has become something of a by-word and something we read about all the time but how does it really relate to us and our dogs? As with humans, stress may be a factor in many behavioural problems, an inability to concentrate and learn and can be a contributory factor in ill health and energy levels.  Visits to the vet, groomer or a stay in kennels can be upsetting for some dogs and can lead to a change in their behaviour in the short or long-term. Sometimes just being left alone can result in distress and unwanted behaviour.  We will look at how to recognize the symptoms and causes of stress, how to reduce them and how to make ours and our dogs lives, easier, healthier and more enjoyable.

There will also be a range of quality dog treats and toys available for sale, including many special offers. This is a great opportunity to enjoy an entertaining and interesting seminar and learn more about stress and your dog.

Unfortunately dogs cannot join us on this occasion.

  Canine Health Conference – 6th  & 7th November 2010, Edinburgh – Royal Highland Centre

This Canine Health Conference is organised by Action 4 Dogs in order to provide an informative platform for exchange of the latest Alternative Medicine, Nutrition and Complementary Therapies available to our canine companions.

Conventional medicine is very good at treating emergency and urgent cases, but has less success with long-standing diseases that keep appearing when drugs are stopped. It is therefore not surprising that an upsurge in attention to holistic practices in Human & Animal Medicine would pique the interest of dog owners.

Opinions about canine nutrition vary among vets, breeders, trainers and the dog owning public. With so many different options and therapies on offer, how do we know what is best and what to choose? The bottom line is that even experts do not always agree on the best type of dog food, remedy or therapy. This Conference will explore the various solutions and will aim at helping us to make more informed decisions

Speakers will include:

Nick Thompson, Holistic Vet,  BSc.(Hons), BVM&S, VetMFHom, MRCVS),

Sally Askew,  B.Sc. (Hons), C&G SAN, MBTER, MGEOTA)

Maeve Grant, MCSP  HPC  ACPAT Cat A, BSc Hons Physiotherapy  PgDip Vet Physio

Tom Middlemas, Owner of Hydrotherapy and Rescue Centre, St Boswells, Scottish Borders

Val Borland B.Sc. (Hons), TTouch Practitioner

  NEW IDEAS IN MEDICINE

Another Not To Be Missed’ presentation by

Holisticvet Nick Thompson BSc (Hons) Path Sci., BVM&S, VetMFHom, MRCVS

Medicine is changing rapidly: MRI scanners offer us views of the body only previously dreamt of by surgeons; chemotherapy, in some cases, is extending life and giving ‘complete remission’; fibre optic technology allows surgeons to treat joints and get you home in days, not months.

But there are major changes in grassroots medicine, as well – the kind of medicine that doesn’t make the headlines, but actually changes more lives than all the medical cutting edge products put together. I have gathered information on these trends, breakthroughs and revelations and I would like to share some of the following, and more:

  • New thoughts on small animal vaccination from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association How Europe is moving away from pharmaceuticals in veterinary medicine
  • The rise of nutraceuticals in animals
  • How the behaviour debate is changing in Europe and the USA
  • New ideas in animal sentience
  • Simple ideas that could change mental and physical rehabilitation in rescue centres
  • Trends in nutrition for behaviourists, trainers, owners and rescue centres

And more – to amaze, inspire, challenge and entertain you  N.T.

Nick qualified with an Honours degree in Pathological Sciences and a BVM&S from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, and worked in traditional practice for 7 years. A lecturer at Southampton University in the use of homeopathy, acupuncture and nutrition in behaviour; Consultant to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust, Verm-X and Natural Instincts pet food and regular contributor to Dogs Today magazine. Nick runs a complimentary veterinary consultancy in Bath www.holisticvet.co.uk specialising in homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutritio.

Saturday 20 November 2010 from 9.30am - 1.30pm
